What is PCR?
Post-Consumer Recycled or Post-Consumer Resin is a recycled plastic material that has been produced from post-consumer waste.
Recycling consumer waste that may otherwise end up in landfill, means PCR is a much more sustainable and environmentally-friendly choice of material.
In regards to packaging, PCR offers a great alternative to more traditionally manufactured plastic packaging.
Generally, post-consumer resin is produced from 3 of the most popular plastics;
- HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
- PP (Polypropylene)
- PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
This is because HDPE, PP and PET are currently all widely recycled so the material can be collected, and reprocessed into resin for use in new packaging.
How is PCR Produced?
The production process begins with the collection of post-consumer waste such as milk and juice bottles. This is done through various channels such as a council, commercial and residential recycling schemes.
The collected waste is then taken to a recycling centre where it is sorted and separated in readiness for a thorough cleaning process. Once cleaned, the waste is dried and converted into plastic pellets or granules. These granules can now be used in the manufacturing of new products such as packaging.
What are the Benefits of PCR?
Not surprisingly, there are many benefits to choosing PCR products. As PCR is a sustainable material, most of these are environmental however, there are financial benefits too.
Reduces your carbon footprint
The carbon footprint of producing post-consumer resin is much lower than using virgin plastics in the manufacturing process.
Reduces the consumption of virgin plastic
By using post-consumer plastics, you are reducing the use of virgin plastics which are produced from fossil fuels.
Helps create a circular economy
A circular economy is a system aimed at eliminating waste and the constant use of resources. Because PCR products are designed to re-enter the manufacturing process, they create a "closed-loop" system where they are constantly reused. This results in plastics not ending up in landfill or the environment.
Creates new opportunities
As more businesses and consumers make the shift to greener and sustainable ways of thinking, PCR packaging provides a fantastic alternative to offer your customers.
Environmentally-friendly and sustainable packaging also shows a corporate responsibility that many consumers are now looking for from their suppliers.
As a leading packaging supplier, we understand that plastic is an invaluable material that plays a crucial role in the world. We rely on it to perform safely and efficiently where other materials could not. However, we want to keep plastic where it belongs, out of the environment and in the circular economy.
Our new PCR containers are just one of the ways we want to do this.
We are launching our new PCR range in unison with the implementation of our updated and improved sustainability strategy.
Our sustainability strategy outlines our commitment to consistently improving our environmental performance and reducing the impact that we have on the world around us. We continue to look for ways to make every part of our business as sustainable and environmentally responsible as possible.
