Environmental taxes are here to stay, and in line with expectations, the Government is increasing Plastic Packaging Tax again this year. From 1st April 2024, the rate of Plastic Packaging Tax will be increasing to £217.85 per tonne, up from £210.82 per tonne.
The tax will apply to all virgin plastic packaging products imported or used in the UK. The scope of PPT applies to primary, secondary and tertiary packaging, so everything from plastic bottles to shrink wrap is included in the legislation.
What should you do about the Plastic Packaging Tax increase?
Invopak has integrated software systems to calculate PPT so the new rate will be applied automatically to your order at the point of sale. Invopak currently displays applicable taxes as a separate line on your invoice, so the PPT costs are clear.
How can you avoid Plastic Packaging Tax?
Plastic Packaging Tax only targets virgin plastic products so choosing recycled or metal packaging will mean paying no PPT.
Invopak stocks a wide range of PCR buckets made from 70% recycled plastic, which are PPT-exempt. They are from the same supplier as our standard white buckets and are manufactured in Europe to the highest quality. Grey PCR is becoming the standard across many industries including, paints, coatings and resins. Due to the nature of recycled plastic, these buckets are not food-grade, so are not suitable for food and beverage use.
Our 30% recycled Bottles and Jerry Cans are made using a COEX manufacturing process, which means they are food-grade. A layer of recycled plastic is sandwiched between two layers of virgin-grade plastic, so they are suitable for food and beverage use.
Metal is exempt from PPT, so it could be another good option. We are one of the biggest suppliers of metal packaging in the UK and have recently set-up our own factory in Manchesterstock a wide range of lever lid paint tins, pails, metal drums, rectangular tins and aluminium bottles.
