Choosing the Right Waste Container

The right UN approved container to use depends on whether the waste is solid, powder or liquid, the mode of transport used for shipping (air, sea and road freight each have different legislative requirements), and any unique packaging requirements of the goods.

Choose a metal drum:

  • To transport hazardous liquids
  • For high-volume waste
  • For chemical, oil and solvent waste

Choose a plastic jerry can:

  • For smaller quantities
  • For chemical waste
  • For laboratory waste

Choose an IBC tank:

  • For bulk storage
  • For industrial waste liquids
  • For large-scale transport

Which industries require UN-approved packaging

Any business that needs to transport or store hazardous waste is likely to require packaging that is UN approved. The most common types of industries that require UN-approved packaging include: Chemical manufacturers, waste management companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, automotive businesses, paint and coatings manufacturers, environmental contractors and industrial cleaning companies.

Are these containers suitable for laboratory waste?

Invopak's rigid containers are suitable for laboratory waste. The right choice will depend on the chemical, biological and physical properties of the lab waste. Heavy duty HDPE jerry cans and IBCs are ideal for liquid chemical waste such as solvents, acids and bases. Steel or tinplate UN drums can be a good choice for bulk lab waste. It is also important to follow all regulatory requirements, including labelling and COSHH measures.

What does a UN packaging code mean?

UN approved packaging has been tested and certified for use with hazardous products. UN packaging must keep the contents contained under the toughest shipping conditions. Each part of the code will set out key details, including manufacturing and what the packaging has been approved for. Read this article to discover more about UN packaging codes.

Which UN-approved container do I need?

The first step is to identify your packaging group hazard level. This should be identified in your product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Packaging Group 1 (High Danger) requires X packaging, which is the strongest tier of packaging. Packaging Group 2 (Medium Danger) requires Y or X-rated packaging, whilst Packaging Group 3 (Low Danger) can use Z, Y or X-rated packaging. The UN code will also include whether the container is certified for liquids (the code will include a kPa hydrostatic pressure rating) or solids (the code will include an S).
